“Being a role model is the most powerful form of educating … too often fathers neglect it because they get so caught up in making a living they forget to make a life.” – John Wooden
Parenthood is changing. More mums are working more. And more dads want to take an active role in bringing up their kids. So what does the workplace do for today’s dads?
Well, a 2017 study by the charity Working Families reported by the BBC claimed:
Almost half of working fathers would like a less stressful job so they could spend more time helping with childcare
One in five fathers were working extra hours
Around a third of dads would take a pay cut for a better work-life balance
Which is maybe why Wednesday 21st June 2017 – the longest day of the year – is Go Home on Time Day, a yearly event aimed at raising awareness of the value work-life balance can bring to both employees and employers in the UK. In response to the report Seamus Nevin, head of employment & skils policy at the Institute of Directors (IoD) said:
Employers should create jobs in a way which allowed both men and women to work flexibly
Government should revisit and revise shared parental leave entitlements, which currently does not offer fathers individual entitlement to time off with their newborn
Dad.info – “Europe’s largest advice and support website for fathers”, established in 2008 to “[C]elebrate the changing role of Dads with engaging, helpful, practical, entertaining resources and content…”
The Fatherhood Institute – The UK’s fatherhood think-and-do-tank which aims to “…support both mothers and fathers as earners and carers; and prepares boys and girls for a future shared role in caring for children.”
