Why Kindness at Work Matters

No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.” – Aesop

As Government-funded initiative Fit for Work says: “Once ‘random acts of kindness’ [or RAKs] were spontaneous, unplanned and unexpected. Now they have their own website and their very own ‘day’.”

Yes, today is World Kindness Day, a day dedicated to celebrating and promoting “kindness in all its forms”. And, a recent 2017 study proves that RAKs make a difference in real-life working environments – like a Coca-Cola plant in Madrid.

They found: “The acts of kindness don’t go unnoticed. The receivers observed more prosocial behaviours in the office and by the end of the study, they were reporting ten times more prosocial behaviours… .”

But it wasn’t just a case of ‘returning favours’, it seems RAKs have a ripple effect: “So workplace acts of kindness – freely chosen – appear to be a way to create virtuous cycles within organisations, benefiting the recipients, the givers, and the climate at large. Just get the goodness started, and enjoy its growth all around you.”

Thus making the workplace just a better place to be. Committed to creating positive workplaces one of Angel’s core values is Wellbeing. And at the heart of wellbeing? Employee relationships. Cited as one of the most common causes of workplace stress negative employee relationships do matter.

The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.” – Oscar Wilde

And while you may not perform an Amelie-like conversion on your Scrooge-ier colleagues as the studies suggest kindness really does make a difference – to everyone!
