Want World Peace & A Great Career? Listen Up!

World Peace & the Workplace

2 weeks ago we have commemorated the International Day of Peace. A UN initiative, the aim is to highlight the importance of all segments of society working together to strive for peace.
What’s world peace got to do with your career?

Consider: The workplace is a microcosm of society and conflict is an inevitable part.

Communication Skills Boost Your Value

From culturally and socially diverse colleagues collaborating to achieve common targets to leading an organisation effective communication is key.
In fact business magnate Warren Buffet considers communication skills so important to workplace success that he once told a class of business students it could boost their value by 50%!
Amongst other things, bad communication and unresolved conflict results in: stifled creativity, barriers and loss of productivity. Not a good business or career model.

Shut Up & Listen

But, did you know 45 – 60% of communication is listening?
Yep, according to Julian Treasure of the Sound Agency: Most communication is down to listening but we retain just 25% of what we hear. In short, to be a better employee and improve career success honing listening skills is vital.

Remember RASA

Julian Treasure teaches, what is called, Active Listening. Using the acronym RASA – ‘rasa’ is a Sanskrit word for juice or essence – as a memory aide, the process has 4 steps – RASA:

Receive – paying attention to the person
Appreciate – making little noises: like, hmm and ok
Summarise – using the word “so” to clarify your understanding
Ask – employ questions afterwards, to further enhance understanding
