Overcoming Fear at Work

From Halloween parties to gothic horrors Crimson Peak at the cinema and a reimagined Jekyll & Hyde on TV fear is big business.

But as Lemony Snicket, fictional author of A Series of Unfortunate Events – a dark saga about vulnerable orphans and a dastardly guardian – says:

“There are two kinds of fears: rational and irrational – or in simpler terms, fears that make sense and fears that don’t.”

While we may like to scare ourselves with things that go bump in the night it’s really our daytime fears we should be wary of.

As classic horror writer HP Lovecraft wrote:

“The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.”

From the threat of redundancy, to taking on your dream career to simply taking a more proactive role in the office the workplace is the centre of many of our more ‘rational’ fears.

We won’t meet a werewolf anytime soon, but our fear of failure, success, or looking stupid can feel that unpredictable. [suggested Tweetable]

Afterall no-one would judge you if you were consumed by a werewolf, would they?

To feel fear is natural but as the late great James Herbert wrote:

“…[T]here’s a fine line between paralyzing dread and galvanizing fright.”

But there’s only ever one way to triumph over a monster and that’s to face it. Tweet: But there’s only ever one way to triumph over a monster and that’s to face it. http://goo.gl/9q2uaA @Angel_HR_UK #MyUSPMonday

Why? Because in the words of Buffy the Vampire Slayer:

“The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. Be brave. Live.” Tweet: The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. Be brave. Live. http://goo.gl/9q2uaA @Angel_HR_UK #MyUSPMonday
